Trehalose

Trehalose is a naturally occurring disaccharide (two-glucose sugar) used in skin care as a humectant and protein-stabilizing agent that moisturizes skin while delivering antioxidant benefits. Trehalose is an exceptionally stable sugar that protects proteins from environmental stress by replacing water molecules during dehydration and neutralizing free radicals. Unlike conventional humectants, it provides dual-action skin benefits by drawing in moisture while preserving structural proteins like collagen and elastin against damage from UV, heat, and dryness.
Trehalose shields structural proteins like collagen and elastin, as well as enzymes involved in antioxidant defense, from conformational damage caused by environmental stressors such as heat, UV exposure, and low humidity. At the same time, trehalose functions as a free-radical scavenger, neutralizing reactive oxygen species that contribute to oxidative stress. This dual mechanism — direct protein stabilization plus antioxidant activity — sets trehalose apart from conventional humectants that hydrate without offering stress protection.
