Description
Mequinol is a synthetic derivate of hydroquinone, and depigmenting agent used to lighten the skin as it’s used for skin depigmentation. As a topical drug mequinol is often mixed with tretinoin, a topical retinoid as a prescription skin lightener. Mequinol, also known as 4-hydroxyanisole or Hydroquinone mono methyl ether (MEHQ), is less irritating than hydroquinone and is not cytotoxic to human melanocytes.
It can be combined with ascorbyl palmitate, to enhance skin lightening.
A clinical trial performed on a group of 595 subjects (486 women and 109 men) with solar lentigines was able to demonstrate the value of this combination. It is often mixed with tretinoin, a topical retinoid.
Mequinol is a Skin Lightening Agent. The mechanism of action is as a Melanin Synthesis Inhibitor the physiologic effect is by means of Depigmenting Activity.
