AHA, BHA or PHA

AHA, BHA, and/or PHA. What you must know

AHA, BHA, and PHA are all types of exfoliating acids used to help improve skin texture and tone.

AHA

Alpha Hydroxy Acids are derived from natural sources such as fruit and milk sugars.
AHAs tend to be gentle and can help improve skin texture, reduce signs of aging, and reduce the appearance of acne scars. They are water-soluble acids that work on the surface of the skin. By leveling out the skin and reducing fine lines and wrinkles, glycolic acid exfoliation can aid in the healing of UV damage. They exfoliate by inducing apoptosis, which causes skin cells to self-destruct. Because alpha hydroxy acids exfoliate the skin and make it more porous, it’s essential to use sunscreen thereafter.
Examples of AHA include:

BHA

BHAs are Beta Hydroxy Acids, they are oil soluble and composed of smaller molecules, so they can get way down inside pores to gently shed dead skin, bacteria, sebum, and pore-clogging debris. That’s why they’re especially good for treating overactive, oily skin.
The most popular BHA acid one can find in skincare products is Salicylic acid. If you’re on the lookout for clearing dull cells off your skin without damaging the essential oils, you may want to consider BHA acids. Beta-hydroxy acids also are relatively gentle.
Examples of BHA include:

PHA

Poly hydroxyl acid is one of the most GENTLE exfoliating acids used in skincare. Their molecular structures are bigger than AHAs and are better for those with sensitive skin, such as rosacea, eczema, and hyperpigmentation. PHA skin products gently exfoliate sensitive skin, without disturbing the moisture levels. They also have humectant properties which help retain moisture reserves in the skin and leave skin with a healthy glow after usage!
Examples of PHA include:
